What a deduction is worth

The amount you claim is not the amount that comes back. The saving is the deduction times your marginal rate.

How the saving is worked out

Tax saved is the deduction multiplied by one rate: the marginal resident income-tax rate for the band your taxable income falls in, plus 2% when Medicare is included. Out of pocket is the deduction minus that saving — what the expense still costs if you paid the full amount to get the deduction.

Taxable income is used only to choose the band. The deduction is not taken off that figure, and it is not split across bands. A claim that would fall partly into a lower bracket is still priced entirely at the marginal rate.

These are the ATO resident rates. Medicare levy of 2% is not included in them. The toggle adds that 2% on its own. Levy reductions, exemptions, and the Medicare levy surcharge are not modelled. Low income tax offset, SAPTO, other offsets, and HELP are not modelled either.

2026–27. $0 – $18,200: Nil. $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200. $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000. $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000. $190,001 and over: $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000.

$18,200 is still in the nil band. $45,000 is still on the first positive rate (16c in 2025–26, 15c in 2026–27). The 30c band starts at $45,001, 37c at $135,001, and 45c at $190,001. The income year on a first visit is the current financial year, which runs from 1 July. From 1 July 2026 that is 2026–27.
