Compulsory HECS-HELP repayment
Enter repayment income for 2025–26 or 2026–27. The statement shows the band and the compulsory amount. From 1 July 2025 that amount is worked out on income above the minimum threshold, except in the top band.
How the repayment is worked out
From the 2025–26 income year, compulsory repayments use marginal rates. You repay on repayment income above the minimum threshold. The top band is the exception: 10% of total repayment income.
Repayment income is taxable income, excluding assessable First Home Super Saver released amounts, plus reportable fringe benefits, total net investment loss, reportable super contributions, and exempt foreign employment income. Salary on its own is not always the full figure.
The same thresholds cover HELP, including HECS-HELP, and VSL, SFSS, SSL, ABSTUDY SSL, and AASL. Where more than one loan is outstanding, the ATO applies compulsory repayments in that order.
An outstanding balance, if you enter one, is divided by this year’s compulsory amount. That rough span assumes the same repayment continues. It leaves out indexation, voluntary repayments, and any change in income, so it is not a payoff date. Where the balance is lower than the calculated repayment, the amount assessed is limited to the balance.
Rates below are the ATO thresholds for 2025–26 and 2026–27, published on the study and training loan repayment thresholds page. This is an estimate only — not tax advice and not the ATO calculator. The sums run in your browser. The last figures you entered stay on this device.
